Question: Can an employee be denied vacation leave if they are absent without the supervisor’s approval and they refuse to discuss the reason for the absence? Answer: Yes. UPPS 04.04.30, Section 3.11a states that vacation leave is to be taken at a time that is mutually agreeable to both the employee and supervisor. Specific leave schedules must be developed and approved in advance by the department head based upon the work needs of the department. The reason for the absence is irrelevant.
