       Staff Council Corner

By Pam Graham

Thanks to Jeff Elam for appearing at this month’s Council meeting and clearing up some of the mystery surrounding Salary Survey and its effect on our pay plan. His explanation of “target” and “market” terms as used to determine our pay ranges was most helpful. We appreciate Jeff taking the time to present to us and we also appreciate that he has agreed to serve as the HR representative on Council’s Compensation and Benefits Committee this year.

Join us for our next regular meeting on Tuesday, December 14 at 10:00 am in Alkek 105-106 for Nancy Nusbaum, Assistant Vice President, Finance and Support Services Planning, and her presentation on the Campus Master Plan. We will probably see Nancy back on our agenda in the spring as this plan develops. The public portion of our meeting in December will conclude with the ending of Nancy’s presentation.

Parallel to the discussion regarding the main topic of our January meeting is other discussion and comments regarding the awkward position of many offices across campus as a result of the implementation of SAP. Currently acting as both the manager of the largest procurement office on campus and as the conduit for information sharing between staff and the President, I clearly see both sides of this issue. Although a degree of discomfort is very normal with systems implementations, I see a need to air and remediate any concerns and move on to the full knowledge and use of SAP as our information management tool, the best we’ve ever had. To this end, Council has required me by consensus to ask all of staff and faculty to direct comments and concerns regarding the effect of SAP implementation on the various offices and any suggestions for improvement to Council for consideration and discussion. Please forward these remarks to me or any member of Council via email so that we have a record of these comments. A list of current Council members, their phone numbers and email addresses can be found at http://www.txstate.edu/StaffCouncil/Members05.htm. At the bottom of this same page, there is a link to send email directly to Council which is currently forwarded to me. Please use the above channels of communication freely. Council wishes to quickly establish if there is anything that we can do to improve the seemingly bumpy process of implementation.
