Graduate Student Insurance Meetings

New benefits-eligible graduate student employees are able to choose between the Student Insurance Plan administered by the Student Health Center and the Employer Group Insurance Program administered by Human Resources.

Some graduate student employees may already be covered by insurance outside the University and may choose not to enroll in either health insurance option offered by Texas State.

In any case, we encourage graduate student employees to attend one of our insurance meetings on August 22 or August 23. Both meetings will include a presentation from Human Resources and the Student Health Center providing valuable information on each plan. If interested, please attend one of the following:

Wednesday, August 22 nd 2:00 – 4:00 pm JCK 460

Thursday, August 23 rd 9:00 – 11:00 am JCK 460

*If you are already enrolled in our insurance, you do not need to attend.

One major difference between the two health plans is that the Employer Group Insurance Program has a 90 day waiting period while the Student Health Insurance Plan has no waiting period.

Once insurance enrollment forms for the Employer Group Insurance Plan are completed by the graduate student employee, Human Resources will process the insurance elections with the appropriate effective date of coverage. For example, if a graduate student is hired on September 1st, insurance coverage will be effective on December 1st.

The Employer Group Insurance Program provides optional coverage elections such as dental, optional life, disability, accidental death and dismemberment, dependent life and long term care without a waiting period. The Student Insurance Plan provides dental and vision coverage.

Graduate student employees can enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan and enroll in just the optional coverages with the Employer Group Insurance Program.

International students are required to have coverage on the first day of school. The Student Insurance Plan is the only choice which provides health insurance coverage the first day of school.

A comparison summary is available at http://www.humanresources.txstate.edu/pdf/GRD%20Insurance%20Comparison%20FY08.pdf to help you make an educated decision between the two plans.
